What is Cockroach?
It is a die-hard enemy of human beings for which it becomes the constant source of their headache. Cockroach often appears in the public premises, vehicles, households and poor sanitary places that bring annoyance to human beings. It often feeds on rotten food and residue foods. It shows up in poor sanitary conditions and feed on their own dropping, excretory substance and foods remains fully contaminated as well as taunting the utensils, clothes and tools. The common species are American Cockroach, German Cockroach and Australian Cockroach.

American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) Australian Cockroach (P. australasiae)

Body Length 40-50mm.  Body Light Brown to Dark Brown

Body Length 20-25mm.  Body Light Brown to Dark Brown

The Daily Features
Cockroach is omnivorous and they forage for a great variety of food, fond of starches, sweets, grease and a great variety of sources, from men's food remains to dead bodies of animals. Cockroach likes to live in damp, humid and warm environment, fond of team-movement, being active in night-time. They will forage for food at night mostly and in the daytime occasionally. They rest on cracks and crevices that shelter them well. When there are shocks or the population in a certain is too dense, they are also found in the daytime. Cockroach is used to touching things on their movement, they take to hind themselves inside wall corner, kitchen cabinet, drawer and the cracks of furniture. The feeding pattern to vomit out their digestive fluid and pass feces at the same time therefore it seriously affects the sanitation. Their somatic gland can release bad odor that taunts the food after they have crawled over it.

German Cockroach
German Cockroach's origin used to be in Europe but now has distributed all over the world.  They are the smallest size amongst the household species. Every adult can bear egg capsule 4-9 pcs.  The egg capsule aligns in pair and every capsule has 38 eggs.  During the development stage of the eggs, female adult will take those eggs inside her abdomen.  Until the egg are mature, they will come out from female's ovipositor and take to hatch.  After 5 times molting, an egg will become an adult within 8 and 12 weeks.  At 25 Cº, normally it takes 95-142 to complete its lifespan.

American Cockroach
American Cockroach mostly forages around inside the household.  It is the most active species with its antennae longer than its body length.  The wings are well-developed in adult male or female.  They like humid and warm places such as kitchen, canteen, basement, wall corner and crevice.  During the whole life of American Cockroach, it can bear 15-84 egg capsules. The capsule shape is like a walnut or a bean.  Each capsule has 14-24 eggs, normally 16 eggs, aligning in pair.  Egg takes 1 month to hatch and nymph will normally take 300 days at 26ºC to complete its stage.   It will molt around 9-13 times depending on the environment conditions.  The lifespan varies greatly amongst the species.  The lifespan of adult is around 100-800 days, or 450 days in average.

Australian Cockroach
Australian Cockroach commonly appears in the household but their population is slightly lower than that of American's.  The wings of the male and female adults are well-developed.  The life features between Australian Cockroach and American Cockroach are similar.  During the lifespan, female cockroach can bear 20-30 capsules.  The length of the capsule is longer than that of American cockroach.  Egg takes 40 days to hatch, 1 year for larva and 1 year for adult in the completion of its lifecycle.

The Spreading Diseases
There are a great varies of microorganism species that can be successfully isolated from the body of Cockroach.  Increasing number of people study to identify if the microorganisms are pathogens or not nowadays.  Robert Kock has found that the food was left a lot of microorganisms when cockroach has crawled over that food known as absence of pathogen previously.   Another study done by other scholar showed there were a lot of bacilli and cocci left on every part of body of cockroach known as in thorax, leg and mouth parts.  American Cockroach has carried the Cholera pathogen from infected patient's manures to food and materials. Another scholar has found the pathogens mostly were tuberculosis, Salmonella, dysentery, protozoa’s cyst, etc.  And many studies showed that the eggs of tapeworm, roundworm, leech and other ecto-parasitic worms are easily found in cockroach body.  There have also been 18 cockroach species found to be carrying pathogens.  Some parasites often take cockroach to be their host.  Besides, cockroach carries allergens to household therefore it will induce allergy.

Cockroach Control
Cockroach becomes one of most serious problem in the household.  It is easy to find their existence once the harborage is uncontrolled and mis-located.  The core management work is the household sanitation.  In addition, chemical control is the basic need.   We take to spray and knockdown the pest first then entire household cleaning comes after.
