Plastic Bottles

According to the "Hong Kong Solid Waste Monitoring Report 2022" published by the Environmental Protection Department, waste plastics are the second largest category of municipal solid waste. In 2022, the disposal of waste plastics in landfills amounted to 2,369 tonnes per day (accounting for 21% of municipal solid waste), of which 206 tonnes per day were plastic bottles, making up 1.9% of the total municipal solid waste.

Plastic is a non-biodegradable material. Recycling plastic not only alleviates the burden on landfills but also reduces the consumption of natural resources, fostering the development of a circular economy.

Baguio’s plastic recycling operations cover upstream, midstream, and downstream processes, including collection, pre-treatment sorting, and recycling. With extensive recycling experience, a large fleet of vehicles, and local recycling facilities, Baguio provides reliable one-stop plastic recycling services to our clients.

Collection

Baguio boasts a large fleet and a robust collection network covering all 18 districts of Hong Kong. Our services cater to government departments, private institutions, commercial buildings, shopping malls, residential estates, and more. Currently, Baguio is also the service contractor for the Environmental Protection Department’s "Pilot Scheme for the Recovery of Recyclable Plastic Materials" in the Central and Western, Eastern, and Kwun Tong districts, collecting and processing recyclable plastics in these areas and transporting them to Baguio’s plastic pre-treatment sorting center for further sorting processes.

Pre-Treatment

Located in Yuen Long, our waste plastic pre-treatment sorting center is equipped with three near-infrared sorting lines, a compactor, and a foam hot melt machine. Utilizing near-infrared technology, the facility efficiently sorts local waste plastics categorized as types 1 to 7. After sorting, the plastics are compacted and baled, then handed over to recyclers to be repurposed into raw materials or products, including those processed at Baguio’s own recycling facilities.

Recycling

The plastic recycling facility in Tuen Mun Eco Park, jointly operated by Baguio, ALBA, and Swire Coca-Cola, and managed by the joint venture company New Life Plastic, processes local waste PET and HDPE. Using advanced technology—near-infrared sorting—the facility transforms waste plastics into high-quality rPET flakes and rHDPE pellets. These materials serve as raw materials for industrial products, prolonging the lifespan of reusable plastics and thus realizing a circular economy while reducing resource loss.
